Work From Home Mom Schedule – Why I Love Being a Stay At Home Mom

Many people wonder what a work from home moms’ schedule might look like, and how stay at home moms spend their time during the day.

I remember when I was in the workforce, I used to dream about being able to stay home with my babies.  I thought that it would be so much easier being home and working online.

Well, let me tell you, working from home with little ones is no walk in the park, BUT I wouldn’t trade what I have now for the world.

What Does A Work/Stay At Home Moms’ Schedule Look Like

I want to answer that question and go over some tips you can implement to accomplish more in your day and actually enjoy time with your family and not feel overwhelmed.

My schedule changes a little here and there depending on what’s going on.

The great thing about working for yourself is schedule flexibility.  I never knew this type of flexibility in my life.

Never in my life have I had a lapse in employment since I started working as a young girl in high school.

I always had a job working for someone else, according to their business needs and always put my life on a shelf for that job.

This whole journey of being a stay at home mom, trying to build a business, and work from home has been a rollercoaster ride.

Just last year, feb. 2019, I quit my corporate job I worked at for 10 years. Before that, I went to college full-time and worked a full-time retail job.

Even further, in my early college days, I worked as a waitress for a wedding hall on the weekends and during special events.

In high school also used to work as a lifeguard for 4 summers.

If I didn’t have an actual job, I was always busy working by babysitting, doing yard work for a neighboring winery and helping around the farm we lived on.

The point I’m trying to make is, I’ve never not had a job. So now that I am home, I had a lot of reprogramming to do.

It was imperative for me to have a mindset switch, to which I am still working through.

It’s an ever-going process of discovery and self-growth.

Life is about always learning new things and being open to trying something that may be out of your comfort zone.

There has been so many new skills that I’ve learned this last past year since I quit my job.  One thing I wasn’t sure about was, I didn’t know what to do with myself work-wise.

Having to prioritize what needed to be done and when was a challenge. There are so many ways to get distracted and work on the wrong things.

Learning new skills and keeping busy wasn’t the problem, it was building structure and routines to accomplish more with less stress.

Why Work From Home?

After I had my 2nd daughter, we naturally fell into a new schedule of having 2 kids, and just being parents.

Raising a newborn into a toddler and sending my 6-year-old to school every day, and taking care of the house, was what took up most of the day.

How the heck can I fit work into my new schedule? 

Juggling the housework feels like a job in itself.

Going back to work after maternity leave was extremely difficult both times. As a new mom, leaving your babies while you go out to work is an emotionally trying time.

When I worked outside of the home I felt like I could never catch up with housework and that I was failing as a mom.  I felt guilty for leaving and missing out on all the precious moments with our girls.

Sometimes being home full-time still seems like an everyday struggle to keep up with housework.

Work From Home/Stay at Home Mom Schedule – & Why I Love Being a Stay At Home Mom

The number one thing I’ve learned as a work from home mom, was that you need to stick to routines as much as possible.

Below I will go over my routine and I will share with you how I stay on top of my tasks and keep daily overwhelm down to a minimum.

7:00 AM – 8:00 AM

Both of my little ones seem to always wake up right at 7:00 am every day.  The first thing I do is get the baby changed and make breakfast for both girls.

While they are eating I drink about 24 oz. of water, take my vitamins and give the kids their vitamins.

Self-care needs to be a priority. Drinking water right when you wake up jumpstarts your metabolism for the day and gives the body some energy to get going.

This tip is also a big reason why I lost 75+ lbs even after childbirth and breastfeeding!

8:00 AM – 8:15 AM

After I get the girls all fed and dressed and brush their teeth,  I take my oldest to the bus stop.

8:15 AM – 12:00 PM

Eat a nice bowl of my husband’s home-made high protein & fiber granola.

As I’m eating breakfast I like to listen to something motivational, or inspiring to give me the boost of motivation to jump-start the day.

After breakfast, I begin to think about the most important tasks I need to accomplish for the day.

How I figure out which tasks to prioritize is by creating a list for household tasks and work tasks.

For work tasks, I try to focus on the most important highest impact tasks that require more of my attention.

If I’m lucky the little one will take a nap around lunch and I can put more energy into these tasks at that time.

If I have time to do less important tasks during the day I will work them in as I can.

In between caring for my youngest, I try and fit in some household chores as I go into different rooms.

Putting things away as I walk through the house and doing little bits of tidying up as I go.

If laundry needs to be done I get that started, then work on my computer for a bit if my little one is occupied playing with blocks or dancing to music.

We love having music play in the house all the time.  We sing and she plays/dances as I type or work on some freelance projects, write for my blog, or my other businesses.

12:00 PM – 12:30 PM

Take a break to eat and feed my youngest and try and get her to take a nap.  If she takes a nap, this is the golden productivity time.

I try and accomplish the task that requires the most focus and whatever I was working on earlier in the day.  I double-check whatever I worked on earlier for client work and wrap up whatever orders I had the previous day.

12:30 PM – 3:30 PM

During this time of the day, I like to finish up any bigger tasks I have been working on.

This is also when I sometimes complete any household tasks I have been working on through-out the day like switching laundry, or putting to dishes away or running the dishwasher before dinner.

(Clothes and dishes seem to be like there is a small army of people living in my house… I don’t know where all the clothes and dishes come from haha)

3:30 PM – 4:00 PM

Toddler snack-time and go to the bus stop and pick up my oldest.

4:05 PM  – 4:30 PM

Do homework with my oldest daughter.  Spend some time together talking about how her day went, what she learned, what her favorite part of the day was.

4:30 PM – 5:45 PM

Feed the girls a snack/small meal to hold them over until dinner.

(If it’s a girl scout night or we have another after school activity, I will feed them an early dinner)

Spend some quality time together, play a game, do an art project, science experiment, watch a movie, or whatever my oldest is interested in doing.

5:45 PM – 6:00 PM

Most nights my lovely husband will make dinner.  Some days we will prepare dinner together.

I like to act as his sous chef and organize, chop veggies, and gather needed ingredients while also tiding the kitchen and loading the dishwasher.

We have a lot of fun working together in the kitchen.  While preparing dinner we often joke around and just be silly together.

6:30 PM – 7:00 PM

Dinner Time!!  We all eat as a family and talk about our days and what may be going on tomorrow.

7:00 PM – 8:00 PM

Bath-time, teeth brushing, storytime and bedtime.  I always try to keep this entire process to about 1 hour.

8:00 PM – 11:00 PM

Get some writing done, shower, and then spend some quality time with my husband watching a movie or tv show.

Some nights we catch up on work with our laptops in the living room watching something silly.

The major benefit of working at home is flexibility and being to work whenever you want.

The one major drawback is knowing when to stop working and spend time unwinding and just being present with your loved ones.

Working from home sometimes blends work and home together which can be draining after a while.

You need to find the balance and stick with it, make it a priority.

My work from home mom schedule changes as needed, and also evolves as I find ways to do things more efficiently and multitask through certain projects.

Taking time to practice self-care and raising your kids and keeping that connection alive with your spouse is more important than your work.

YES, your work helps support your family, but it is not a replacement for your family and watching your kids grow.

Somedays we need to work more than others BUT we always need to find time to just be present and be together.

Tips On Staying Balanced and Calm During The Work Week

1. Always Plan Out Your Day:

When you plan out your day you take the stress out of what to do next.  You know what you need to focus on and you can remove the overwhelm by only thinking about the most important tasks of the day.

2. Do The Most Impactful Tasks First

Working on the most impactful tasks can make your mood rise and help the momentum of the day.

3. Clean Little Bits Here and There As You Go From Room To Room

As you move through the house and you see something out of place bring it with you to the room it belongs in. If everyone does this it will keep the clutter down.

It’s also a good habit to teach your kids. Having everyone pick up after themselves make the house a much more calm and relaxing environment.

4. Always  Give Yourself Some ‘You’ Time

Whether it be 15 mins of meditation or motivational videos, do some yoga, whatever it is that will help you be more productive throughout the day.

You need to prioritize taking care of yourself if you expect to be able to take care of anyone else or anything else in your life.

5. Remember that you can’t stress enough to change anything.

Just focus on what you’re working on in the moment and always work towards your goal. Stress won’t get you closer to your goal.

Push past the stress and just give your attention to what you need to accomplish.

Take one thing at a time and give it all you’ve got. Don’t spread yourself too thin and remember to take care of yourself.
