The concept of personal power became popular in the last decade as a way to conceive of our personal agency andefficacy to change one’s own life. And when it comes to interpersonal relationships, power can either be positive, as in personal power, or negative, as in the types of overt and covert power we try to place on other people.

Your personal power comes from within and is founded upon your own abilities, confidence, and strength. It is acquired as you grow and develop throughout your life and encompasses all your desires to have satisfaction and meaning within your life and interpersonal relationships.

Personal power comes from a desire to better and master yourself, not to change or have power over other people. Personal power is grounded in your own qualities, vision, and needs, but it is manifesting in the way you treat, respond to, and connect with other people.

Personal Power is based on your strength, confidence, and competence.

Like strength, confidence, and competence, it takes time to develop, build, and learn to use properly. This isn’t a tool that you learn to use by taking one class, can put down after using a few times and then pick right back up after abusing it, or generally ignore. It’s a necessary component of you.

Personal power is your self-assertion, and a healthy need for love and satisfaction.

There are many things you may be doing that relinquish your personal power to other people. When you give away your power, you are left with less or none, which can lead to feelings of hopelessness, shame, anger, and fear. Here are some of the ways you may be giving away your power.

1.You want to be accepted, liked, or protected.

You likely give away some of your power to others when you have a powerful desire to be well-liked. Pleasing others so that you fit in is a common way you relinquish your power to others.

2.You think it is good to be a victim.

Many of us choose to be the victim because it is easier, it makes someone else happy, or otherwise pleases someone else at your expense. For some, playing the victim is akin to being a martyr, something we do for virtuous reasons. Being a victim means the world is acting upon you, which denies your responsibilities in your choices or actions, and it causes you to worry about or regret many decisions you may make.

3.You decide to allow others to tell you who you are.

As adults, our most significant responsibility is to continue to evolve and grow as we age and experience the world. Developing your core self means you decide to author your own story, not allowing others to influence you or to tell you who you should be.
